The Christmas shoes
by Donna VanLiere
I read the book first, and then the made-for-TV movie followed. The movie is now in DVD format. What a wonderful, inspiring story to read for the holidays or any day. This story of two people whose lives intersect briefly one Christmas Eve shows how a small, insignificant event can alter your life forever. The book details the family life of Robert Layton, a high-powered bankruptcy attorney and Nathan Andrews whose mother is dying of ovarian cancer. When Nathan tries to buy a pair of glittery shoes for his mother and does not have enough money he turns to the man behind him in line and asks for help. That man, Robert Layton, has his life changed forever in this poignant moment. This is a short little book and can be a quick read, and it will bring a tear to your eye. The movie seems to be based on the famously sappy country song sung by Bob Carlisle of the same name, and tweaked some from the book. There are certainly moments when The Christmas Shoes lays on the sentiment woefully thick, but you’d have to be and ogre not to be touched when Maggie (Nathan’s mom) and her husband have one last dance. I enjoyed the book better than the movie, but either one would be a holiday treat.
